Event: The 3rd NLP Conference

Saturday,

September 8th, 2012

Pusat Studi Kebudayaan Jepang

Universitas Indonesia.

I went to The 3rd NLP Conference. At first, I was accompanying my husband who need to work as an MC in that event. I always love to learn a new things and this is the first time I know NLP so I make my sure brought something to learn at the end of the day. At first my mind went blank as I am a newbie to NLP.

A brief about NLP.
Neuro-linguistic programming (NLP) is an approach to communication, personal development, and psychotherapy created in the 1970s. The title refers to a stated connection between the neurological processes ("neuro"), language ("linguistic"), and behavioral patterns that have been learned through experience ("programming") and can be organized to achieve specific goals in life. The founders of NLP, Richard Bandler and John Grinder, say that NLP is capable of addressing problems such as phobias, depression, habit disorder, psychosomatic illnesses, and learning disorders.[citation needed] Their stated aim was in "finding ways to help people have better, fuller and richer lives."[8][9] Bandler and Grinder claimed that if the effective patterns of behaviour of exceptional people could be modeled then these patterns could be acquired by others. NLP has been adopted by private therapists, including hypnotherapists, and in management workshops and seminars marketed to business and government. (wikipedia)

A simple conclusion (to me) NLP is how to control mind , to process language and pattern in how we think and do. To achieve something in your life such as SUCCESS! (Correct me if I am wrong) *Seriously I don't get it with the idea of success*

There's a lot of trainer and practitioners at NLP Conference. The event start from 08 AM to 08 PM and divided into three session:

  • Asep Haerul Gani, “Transforming Self: Sufi Model”
  • Peter Wrycza, “Cultural Modeling and Deep Transformation”

In each session you can choose one trainer or practitioner you want to learn from or the topic that interest you most. In session 1, I went to dr. Andhyka Sedyawan class about Life Changing through Amazing Modeling. At this point I still have a blurry understanding about NLP. There's a lot of method in NLP and dr. Andhyka explain about Modelling method. Though the sample he explain is how to model human (better if s/he still alive) and set a goal and to make a better you. In simple, we do it everyday unconsciously or maybe for some people (like me) consciously. dr. Andhyka told us we set someone to be model, it can be 1 person, 2, 3, 4 and so on. Basically, we learn some good things from other and copying it into ourselves later we combine with our own taste. Our style.

To me, I don't particularly model someone, me I more like learning everythings that good and bad from someone and make it a sample of life. Sound similar?

Here are some good points that I dr. Andhyka presented that day: Modelling.

  1. Make your goal : Make sure you list your goal
  2. Pick your best model : Better if your model still alive so you have a chance to meet s/he and learn directly
  3. Using their shoes : (Don't really get this) I think you should try to do what they do
  4. Produce similar result : By the time you model someone, you copy someone in expectation to meet their result
  5. Clean up the pattern : Takes what good and match for you and leave what doesn't
  6. Make your own formula : Once you have the ability to make your own taste
  7. Pass it on : Share to people

IMO, indeed agree with what dr. Andhyka shared to us but for me I am not gonna use it to model someone but definitely what he shared are something I did to my writing style. He said it is okay to copy or plagiarism someone in order to learn something new. By the time you learn from one person to the other you will find out that what good or bad for you and you will start to develop something that has your own taste.

I don't have writing background and struggling so hard to make a good articles or stories. I was learning it slowly for writer that I like and develop my writing style so I understand exactly what dr. Andhyka trying to shared about modelling. dr. Andhyka also talked about unconsciously incompetent or competent means somehow we able to do something or not to do something unconsciously. Like if we practiced to become an MC and speak in front of people again and again later when we were suddenly asked to MC an event we capable to do it even without preparation, that's mean you are unconsciously competent (to become an MC). But this things cannot be applied to me, as I know what I am capable and incapable of something. If it's for me it's become what I consciously incompetent and competent. I think the more we understand ourselves the more you know what you in/capable of :)

This first session I get the meaning for modelling method but still struggling to know the essence of NLP. In session 2, I went to Hendry Risjawan class about Quantum Modeling: Cara Cepat Mencapai Keinginan, I suppose to go to dr. Kasim Rasjidi class  to know about the Impacful Healing for You and Others but I tend to get the class late. I didn't get the idea in the session 2 as I attend Hendry Risjawan class late too :D. I only get the idea if we can transfer energy like love energy to someone we want to share with. Actually the energy itself can consist positive and negative energy. Instead transferring bad energy it's better to transfer good energy like LOVE (through physical contact like HUG). Do you read my post about how to RECHARGE through hug?

In session 3, I went to Peter Wrycza class about Cultural Modeling and Deep Transformation. Why I get interest? Because it is said Cultural Modelling I thought it maybe about culture. Ahhaha I am culture freak! Mr. Peter has been learning about NLP since 30 years a go (correct me if I am wrong, I am not really good at memorizing) and he's the 3rd generation of NLP. Maybe he wanted to explain a deeper lesson for the audience apparently some of the audience is new to NLP (like me) so he did try to explain in a very basic and simple to make a good understanding for us, which is it works.

Learning Process means: Distinction, Pattern and Modelling. Distinction, (I can't put it into good words) so I'll borrow Mr. Peter conclusion, distinction is an action, you can say it something that stands alone (I think, correct me if I am wrong). A generalization between distinction create pattern. Pattern is interaction (could be interaction between one action to another action). A generalization between pattern create model. Model is choreography.

Modelling divided into 2:
  1. Analytic : for example, for a person to do something s/he needs to think, think, think first. Analyst.
  2. Intuitive : a feel from the inside. Example: a kid learn how to be an Indonesian kid without being told bla bla bla. Copying.
Cultural Modelling : Systemic Presence.
Presence is consciously being present at this time, being present as a whole (body, mind, soul). Presence helps to connect with other to become one. In this class we were given a demonstration of being presence. I was paired up with someone I just knew that day, we analyze each other by being presence. I have to admit it's very hard to do. In practice I try to be present as a whole but I guess my body just won't listen, I keep playing with my feet and pen in order to obscure the awkwardness between us. Then we were told to exchange seat and try to see me in my partner eyes, I could do it only for short moment, clearly I can picturized my self in my partner eyes. When learn to associated my SELF with OTHER and become a group called "WE". Basically "we" consist 2 (two) self. Later we were paired up with another "we" (2 different people) and become a bigger "WE". If continue to create a "WE" that's how system were made. That's we create a circle of people we called family, community, and then citizen and then universe.

We were told to think "What is Indonesia that differ from other country?" I was excited at first because it was a small class and small group. You know I don't like big group with bunch of people. Our "WE" was consist of 5 people (including me), as we discussed what is Indonesia we found ourselves in an argument, a paradoks where pros and cons are exsist. It's very hard to have 5 new and different people and called ourselves "WE" because (IMO) "WE" is one, together same voice no matter how many argument you will have inside. I was the one with the least voice as I feel uncomfortable to talk in a big group. Later we were asked to stand up behind our seat and to look and to think what we see inside "WE". I saw myself and the others clearly there. This proses is to dissociate from what we called "WE" to see from others perspective. Works! At the end of the class we formed a bigger "WE" with all of the audience and have a reflection about our country. I have to admit this is the most touched class I've been attend. Thank you, Peter.

As why I remain silent in my "WE" discussion it's because I have different perception with others. My attitude and the way I think may look I have no nationalism but that's just incorrect, I learn I love Indonesia more than anything. Deep down myself I love this country with all the goodness and badness. No matter how damage or repair this country I am still gonna love this. No matter there's a lot of corruption, killing, riot or anything bad I feel Indonesia is the most secure and safe country. Indonesia is my home. and for the first time I don't know why I cry when sing Indonesia Raya at the beginning of the event. See don't ask my nationalism!

I hope this will help you to found out what is NLP. I am interested with Peter subject about Deep Transformation, limited time make me can't learn more at Peter class. I'll learn again later.

Travelogue: Green Canyon (Cukang Taneuh)

Originally named Cukang Taneuh in Sundanese (a local language) but then French tourist feels it has Green Canyon-vibe so that's how it start known as Green Canyon. 10 minutes away from Batu Karas.  Green Canyon is actually Cijulang river stream passing through the cave filled with beautiful stalactites and stalagmites.

Day 2, me and my family decided to go to Green Canyon and doing body rafting. In the hotel I am staying gave information where should I have body rafting. They arrange us to meet with people who actually found the body rafting track, he explain what we will do and what we need to do and wear for body rafting. It is Baraja (body rafting provider) own by Mr. Rachmat. It cost me around IDR 250.000 (US$ 26,5) to have body rafting which already include a set body protector, snack and lunch.

My group consist of 12 people, my family and other guest. Mr. Rachmat send two people to be our guide of the day: Mr. Jarot and Mr. Someone (I forgot his name). They picked us up in our hotel by pick up and then we pick up other guest. We stopped by in Baraja Office to get ourself equipped, we get a life vest, helmet and a mountain sandal (they forgot ass-protector :D). Before we headed to our starting point, our guide ask us to keep unnecessary things in their office (which is safe) and only bring stuff that we want to bring such as camera. They will bring it for us using waterproof bag so basically we didn't bring anything just ourself. They will take the picture for us only if you bring yourself a Go Pro. They started to give instructions like to always swim in our pack and to keep our mouth from bad things. It consider natural and some magical things could happen (local believe).

It is better to come for body rafting in dry season, because in rainy season the water will turn brown because of massive water volume. It's better to do it also in the morning even if the water is so cool.

Briefing and Praying

After our guide made sure everything was ready, we headed the starting point using pick up. It takes 30 - 40 minutes through narrow and rocky hills and a little walk downhill takes about 10 minutes. I made up my mind and "Byuuuuurrrrrr" I went in the water and it's so COLD! Dang! I hate cold.

This is me dying from cold and craving for some heat. No works!

It needs a lot of effort and a very good physic. I didn't recommend this for someone who easily get sick like me. The only way in is the starting point and the only way out is Green Canyon. It takes 3 - 4 hours by body rafting. Make sure you feed up yourself.

The water stream is pretty decent at the first time I went in to the water. You can lay back, swim or any free style you like. Despite in cold water I am in an awe of the beautiful scenery, I've been to several places and Green Canyon is way more beautiful. Along the river you will see natural forest, caves, rocks, stalagmites, stalactites. You need to be careful when across rapid water stream but you don't have to worry your guide will help you. They help me a lot everytime I get swept away the rapid water stream. You will tracking through some big rocks to avoid rapid water stream.

Half to Third-Fourth journey you will have a stop and enjoy some snack while make yourself a little bit warm. After some snack you will continue swim to the Green Canyon. Don't miss to try to jump from Batu Payung, a 7-meter-high big rock. Many people have the courage to do that but not me, I am pretty coward lol but I try to jump from a 5-meter-high big rock accompanied by the guide. Green Canyon is our finish point. You will need to take a boat to go back to Baraja office and then to have lunch.

So far, Green Canyon is the most memorable and exciting adventure. The beauty and how the nature mesmerized me it just so beautiful. Despite I hate the cold, I love to be there.

A little crowded out there!

.Cheers.

Travelogue: Batu Karas

It was August 2012. Two days after moslem big celebration "Idul Fitri".

Arranged a short trip for my cousin who came from France for vacation. Originally, I was going to Pangandaran but my aunt says it's going to be very full. I try to find a destination which consist beach, water and sunshine. My aunt decided to go to Batu Karas, 34 km or 1.30 hours away from Pangandaran.

To get to Batu Karas, by car it takes 9 - 10 hours. Considered I went there in national holiday to anticipate traffic me and my family depart from Jakarta on Tuesday at 10 PM and arrived in Banjar at 06:00 in the morning. Taking a little rest in family house we continued our trip at 8 AM to Pangandaran and Batu Karas, we arrived in Batu Karas at 11:30 AM. It was a national holiday, though no matter I think Batu Karas will less crowded than Pangandaran it just didn't work out. The road to Batu Karas is narrow and not yet paved makes the way there even more crowded.

My suggestion: Never come here on national holidays. An info from local, on non-national holiday we rarely see people play in the beach.

Seeing the crowded and messy beach made me lost my appetite to play in the beach. So I decided to take a rest for a while after I talk to people in the hotel for alternative beach. There are only few hotel in Batu Karas that head-to-head with the beach. The hotel I am staying is JavaCove, a hotel owned by Australian couple and voted by 'National Geographic Traveler' as one of their favorite hotels in Indonesia . The hotel price is a bit expensive for domestic tourist but still for me it's worthed. They have the cheapest one is Surfers Pad, I want to try this one but since I went there with family I used bigger room. I love this hotel, they have a new swimming pool so if you don't want to go to the beach you can spend some relaxation time here.

This room is for max 3 persons or 3 adults + 1 children under 12

The restaurant

Batu Karas is a perfect place if you want to learn to surf. If you expect to have a big wave for surf, maybe this is not the place but don't worry there's plenty beachbreaks nearby. I found myself in an awe as I try to search secret beach the local told me to. There's a deserted beach near Batu Karas, you need to walk 10 - 15 minutes uphill and then downhill, voila! A beautiful dark sand beach.

There's a lot of place to eat especially seafood so don't worry. West side restaurant from JavaCove taste better but if you want something even better you need 10 min ride outside Batu Karas and near Green Canyon there's a seafood restaurant that even better.

I hope to sunbathing but apparently it didn't work out since national holiday there's too many people. So we decided to visit Green Canyon or Cukang Taneuh on day 2 and a long ride body rafting. Tell you in the next post.

Hmm, I think I don't have the picture of Batu Karas itself. Wait... This is the best I can have since I didn't take picture of the crowded beach :D

Cheers.
